Big Spring Community Services Center Concept Design
Big Spring, Texas
Big Spring is a historic, natural restoration site dating back to 1528. It remains one of the most culturally significant sites in Texas as it is home to extensive archeological research near the Llano Estacado and Trans-Pecos regions. The Spring itself has also been noted as a major contributor to how a large portion of western Texas developed, specifically in regard to the Comanche tribe and the introduction of the Texas and Pacific Railway. As a result, the town of Big Spring was established in 1882 to what is now an expanding city in the heart of west Texas.
Big Spring Park’s Community Services Center celebrates the Spring through its preservation of the site’s history and flourishing environment. The concept design fully integrates with the lake, connecting to existing trails and amenities within the park. The Center utilizes locally sourced limestone as a nod to surrounding structures, creating a sense of cohesion and identity throughout the landscape. By placing the new Center on the lake with large expanses of windows, visitors can enjoy intimate lakefront views from all locations. This allows for excellent backdrops for local events, weddings, educational programs, receptions, showers, and conferences, as well as providing ample natural light to spaces within. The design includes an industrial kitchen, ballroom, meeting rooms, a lecture hall, smart classrooms, and administrative offices to support the various events hosted at the Center. A large roof structure shades the outdoor circulation, minimizing the need for active conditioning systems for the Center and encourages visitors to explore the outdoors. Interior and exterior spaces provide a strong connection to and engage with the existing landscape, creating an interactive environment all visitors can appreciate.
